Top +2 Colleges in Nepal: complete guide for 2025-26
After SEE results land, one question dominates every household in Nepal: which +2 college should I join? The choice shapes the next two years of your life and sets the direction for university. This guide covers everything — streams, boards, top colleges, fees, and how admissions actually work.
What is +2 in Nepal?
"+2" refers to Grades 11 and 12 — the two years of higher secondary education that follow the Secondary Education Examination (SEE, formerly SLC). It is governed by the National Examination Board (NEB), established under Nepal's Ministry of Education.
After completing +2 and passing the NEB Grade 12 board exam, students are eligible to apply for bachelor's programs at Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), Pokhara University (PU), Purbanchal University, and other institutions. The Grade 12 transcript is also the primary document for applying to universities abroad.
Available streams
- Science: The most competitive stream. Leads directly to engineering, medicine, pharmacy, and IT programs. Requires strong SEE grades in Mathematics and Science.
- Management: The second most popular stream. Covers business, accountancy, economics, and marketing. Feeds into BBA, BBS, BIM, and other business bachelor's programs.
- Humanities: Covers social studies, sociology, political science, psychology, and languages. Broad and accessible; suits students heading toward law, education, or social sciences.
- Education: Prepares students for teaching careers and the B.Ed program.
- Law: Offered at a small number of institutions; prepares students for the LLB program.
NEB vs Cambridge A Level vs CBSE
Not all +2 colleges follow the NEB curriculum. Some offer international tracks:
- NEB (National Examination Board): The standard Nepal government curriculum. Fees range from NPR 5,000/year at government campuses to NPR 3,00,000/year at top private colleges. Fully recognised by all Nepal universities and most foreign institutions. The most accessible option for most students.
- Cambridge A Level (GCE A Level): Offered by about 30–40 institutions, mostly in Kathmandu. Cost is significantly higher — typically NPR 4,00,000 to 7,00,000 over two years including Cambridge exam fees. Globally recognised, particularly for universities in the UK, USA, Australia, and Canada. Best choice if you plan to study abroad.
- CBSE (Class 11-12): The Indian central board. Offered at a very small number of schools in Nepal. Recognised by Indian and most international universities. Less common than NEB or A Level.
Top +2 colleges in Nepal at a glance
Here is a quick overview of the most respected institutions. Detailed guides for science and management streams are linked below.
- St. Xavier's College, Maitighar (Kathmandu): Nepal's most prestigious NEB science college. Jesuit-run, merit-only admission, entrance exam plus interview. Consistently produces NEB toppers.
- Budhanilkantha School (BNKS), Budhanilkantha: A fully residential national school founded with government support. The first institution in Nepal to offer Cambridge A Levels. About one-third of students are admitted on full government scholarship. An exceptional choice for those who want boarding school discipline alongside strong academics.
- Prasadi Academy, Lalitpur: Five-time #1 ranked NEB science college by the government. Minimum GPA 3.0 required for Science. One of the most academically demanding private colleges in Nepal.
- National School of Sciences (NSS), Lainchour (Kathmandu): One of the largest and most respected NEB science colleges, with intake of around 1,200 students per year. Also offers bachelor's programs in science and technology.
- Trinity International College, Dillibazar (Kathmandu): Offers both NEB +2 and Cambridge A Level under one roof. Well-regarded for academic results and student support. A good middle-ground option.
- Little Angels' College (LAC), Hattiban (Lalitpur): Established in 1997. Offers NEB and A Level programs. Located just south of Kathmandu ring road; popular for its environment and affordable fees relative to city-centre colleges.
- Himalayan White House International College, Tinkune (Kathmandu): NEB-affiliated with Science, Management, and Law. Known for good lab infrastructure and transport across the valley.
- Uniglobe College, New Baneshwor (Kathmandu): One of the few campuses offering both NEB +2 Management and bachelor's (BBA) on the same campus. Pokhara University affiliated.
Colleges outside Kathmandu
Not every student needs to move to Kathmandu. Strong colleges exist across Nepal:
- Pokhara: Prithvi Narayan Campus (large TU-affiliated public campus), Pokhara Commerce Campus, Gandaki Boarding School
- Chitwan: Birendra Multiple Campus (Bharatpur) — one of Nepal's most respected public campuses
- Biratnagar: Mahendra Morang Adarsh Multiple Campus — large, reputable TU-affiliated institution in eastern Nepal
- Butwal: Butwal Multiple Campus, ISMT College Butwal
- Dharan: Dharan Multiple Campus, with BPKIHS nearby for medical aspirants
Public TU-affiliated campuses outside Kathmandu charge as little as NPR 5,000–25,000 per year — a fraction of Kathmandu private college fees — while maintaining solid academic reputations.
How to choose the right college
Ask yourself these questions before deciding:
- What career path am I targeting? Medicine or engineering → Science stream at a strong college. Business → Management. Teaching or social work → Humanities or Education.
- Will I stay in Nepal or go abroad for university? If abroad, A Level opens more doors. If Nepal, NEB is the standard path.
- What can my family afford? Government campuses cost a fraction of top private colleges. NEB scholarship programs can help cover fees for eligible students.
- How far is the commute? A two-hour daily commute will wear you down over two years. Factor in transport costs too.
- What is the college's board exam pass rate? Ask to see NEB Grade 12 results for the past three years — not just marketing claims.
- Does the college have lab infrastructure? For science students especially, working physics, chemistry, and biology labs are not optional.
Approximate fees (annual, Kathmandu)
