The +2 Science stream is the most competitive and most sought-after pathway in Nepal's higher secondary education. The college you attend matters — for the labs you practise in, the teachers who prepare you, and the exam results that determine where you go next. Here is a detailed guide to Nepal's top NEB science colleges for 2025-26.

What the science stream covers

NEB +2 Science runs over Grades 11 and 12. Compulsory subjects are English, Nepali, and Mathematics. Students then choose one of two optional subject groups:

  • PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology): The pre-medical track. Required for MBBS, BDS, B.Pharm, B.Sc Nursing, and related health science programs.
  • PCM / PCC (Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science): The engineering and technology track. Required for BE, B.Sc CSIT, BIT, and similar programs.

Some colleges also offer PCMB (all four optional subjects) for students who want flexibility, though this is a heavier workload.

The NEB Grade 12 board exam — held annually in March-April — is the primary assessment. Results are published by NEB at neb.gov.np and through Nepal Telecom's SMS service.

Minimum SEE GPA requirements for Science

NEB's official minimum is a GPA of 2.0 in SEE with C+ (or better) in both Science and Mathematics, and at least D+ in English, Nepali, and Social Studies. However, every top private college sets a much higher internal bar. In practice:

  • GPA 3.5–4.0: Eligible to apply for any science college including St. Xavier's and Prasadi Academy
  • GPA 3.0–3.49: Strong candidate for mid-to-upper tier science colleges
  • GPA 2.0–2.99: Eligible for science at many mid-range and government colleges

St. Xavier's College, Maitighar

Location: Maitighar, Kathmandu (central) | Board: NEB | Est.: 1951

Consistently ranked Nepal's most prestigious NEB science college, St. Xavier's College is run by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and is famous for its holistic, rigorous approach to education. The college only offers the Science stream — PCB and PCC — which keeps its entire focus on science excellence.

Admission process: Strictly merit-based. To even apply you need 'A' grades in Science, Mathematics (both compulsory and optional), and English, plus 'B+' or better in all remaining SEE subjects. Shortlisted candidates sit a 100-MCQ written entrance exam covering Science, Mathematics, English, and Logical Reasoning, followed by a panel interview.

Nepal's premier residential national school, founded with government support and the first institution in Nepal to introduce Cambridge GCE A Levels. Fully boarding and co-educational — students live, eat, and study on campus, which creates deep academic discipline and strong peer culture.

What makes it unique: About one-third of admitted students receive a full Government of Nepal scholarship, selected from across all 77 districts by merit and need. This makes BNKS genuinely accessible regardless of financial background. The school also offers NEB +2 Science alongside its A Level program.

Fees: For full fee-paying Grade 11 students, approximately NPR 6,00,000–7,00,000 per year, which is all-inclusive (boarding, lodging, meals, tuition, and exam fees). For the quality and comprehensiveness of education, this is considered excellent value for a residential A Level program.

Why choose it: Immersive residential environment; first A Level school in Nepal; strong government scholarship scheme; outstanding alumni in all sectors of Nepali public life.

Prasadi Academy, Lalitpur

Location: Manbhawan-5, Lalitpur (Patan) | Board: NEB | Est.: 1997

Prasadi Academy has been ranked the #1 NEB +2 college by the Government of Nepal five times — more than any other institution. It is one of the most academically demanding private colleges in Nepal and is not for students who want an easy ride.

Admission requirements: Science stream requires a minimum SEE GPA of 3.0 from NEB, and you must have taken Optional Mathematics. Management stream requires minimum GPA 2.2. These are hard minimums — many admitted students have GPAs well above 3.5.

Tips for getting admitted to a top science college

  • Check the GPA cutoff honestly. If a college requires GPA 3.0 and you scored 2.5, apply for your realistic range — do not waste the admission season waiting for a long-shot.
  • Prepare for the entrance exam. St. Xavier's, Prasadi, NSS, and most top colleges run their own entrance tests. Practice MCQs in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and English in the weeks between SEE results and entrance dates.
  • Apply to multiple colleges simultaneously. Deadlines overlap. Submit forms to your top 3–4 choices at once.
  • Visit the labs before enrolling. Ask to see the Physics and Chemistry labs. If equipment is broken or the lab is visibly neglected, that tells you something about day-to-day academic standards.
  • Ask about the teacher turnover rate. Consistent faculty matters more than brochure promises.
